This question originally came from the Ask Me A Question blog, where it was submitted by Spider. We are opening it up here as a forum discussion as well.
This question mixes space exploration, politics and speculation. A Mars base would be one of the hardest projects any country could attempt, and it would raise huge technical, legal and international questions.Spider wrote: Has anyone heard of the Chinese wanting a base on Mars, or is it just a silly rumour? I reckon if they start this, they will want to claim Mars for themselves.
It is worth discussing carefully rather than turning it into panic or conspiracy talk.
A few points to discuss:
- Could any country realistically build a permanent Mars base soon?
- What would be the biggest technical challenge?
- Should space exploration be national, international or private?
- Could any country "claim" Mars, or would space law prevent that?
- Would a Mars base be a scientific achievement, a political statement, or both?
Could China Build A Base On Mars?
