This question originally came from the Ask Me A Question blog, where it was submitted by Janey. We are opening it up here as a forum discussion as well.
This is a better question than it first looks. Timekeeping used to be far less standardised, and railways played a major role in making standard time necessary.Janey wrote: Just curious - what time is it right now? Years ago, there were different times at various railway stations, so I am told. Is this still the case in different places?
Today, most countries use official time zones, but the world still has some unusual time differences, daylight saving changes, half-hour zones, and regional quirks.
A few points to discuss:
- Why did railways make standardised time so important?
- Do you know any countries or regions with unusual time zones?
- Should daylight saving time still exist?
- Have time zone differences ever caused confusion for you?
- Is local time still meaningful in a global online world?
