What Is The Cheapest Grocery Shop In The UK?

This question originally came from the Ask Me A Question blog, where it was submitted by Spider. We are opening it up here as a forum discussion as well.

Spider wrote: Just a quick question here: what is the cheapest grocery shop in the UK? I sometimes go to Aldi, then Tesco at other times, but is there a formula to get the cheapest shopping?

This is a practical question, but the answer can change quickly.

The cheapest shop may depend on location, offers, own-brand products, household size, delivery costs, loyalty cards, special buys and what a person actually buys each week.

A few points to discuss:

• Which UK supermarket feels cheapest for your normal shop?
• Do Aldi and Lidl always win, or does it depend on the basket?
• Are loyalty cards genuinely useful or just confusing?
• Do you save more by meal planning, batch cooking or shopping around?
• What tricks help keep grocery costs down without buying poor-quality food?

Prices change, so treat replies as personal experience rather than fixed financial advice.
